“Marking the 001 on Northfield Records, the 'Gilbert Road EP' unearths three individual slabs of late-night / post-rave drum chug, blue hour breakbeat business and down time sound stream. Laying the foundations for this new label spawned out of Bristol's 'CORN' nights - This 12" comes as the natural evolution of physical music carved for the session.
Produced on Gilbert Road, BS5 each of the tracks come loaded with a wicked flux of raw mood music that can be deployed to full effect on, as well as off the dancefloor.
On the A1, in a kind of extra-heavy half time mode, Holsten offers up a special cut of stretched breakbeat weight with a subtly euphoric, yet perfectly paranoid edge. This one's full of forward momentum and comes locked and loaded with a pleasing classic feel to it.
Next up we got UVB-76 label mate Karkossyn on the buttons under the excellently named 'Grandma Love' alias. Emerging from the depths with a succinct shower of snare workouts, rattling subs and fully ethereal pads for some proper late night/early hours trip-bliss gear.
Swerving across your headtop to round things off, the final cut of the disc retains a subtle dose of the dread that runs through each of the previous tracks on this release, but provides a rewarding amount of elation in the shape of a fully meditative 15+ min sound excursion. A satisfyingly minimalistic tangle of an undulating guitar hook and shimmering feedback drone, this one is produced by SHFTD's Observer, here as Frank Silva.
